Mold have been a source of much anxiety in recent years. Daytime TV ads and local news reports warn us of 'killer mold' lurking just behind your bedroom sheetrock! The reality is a little less dramatic, but still something to watch out for as a property owner. Mold can certainly cause allergies, even asthma attacks. Mold is present in the air everywhere outside of the arctic, but normally at levels that our bodies easily withstand. The problem occurs when your home is chronically wet. Don't take water 'intrusion' or leakage lightly. Even small seeping intrusions can feed a mold bloom. Although mold won't generally grow on fiberglas, insulation can act like a sponge and wick water into contact with wood and sheetrock. For more information on mold problems, detection, and cleanup, click here to visit the EPA's homeowner's mold guide.
Radon is an odorless, colorless, and radioactive gas that can potentially give you lung cancer. It bubbles up from the natural breakdown of uranium and other radioactive materials in soil. Over time, it may build up in a home. Testing kits can determine your building's radon levels. Fortunately for us, radon emissions are relatively low in Harris county since most of our soil is river mud anyway. To learn more about radon, click here to read the EPA's guide to Radon for homeowners.
